Kumbh Mela, ’festival of the Sacred Pitcher’ is an important Hindu pilgrimage, celebrated every 12 years. The earliest mention of Prayaga and the bathing pilgrimage is found in Rigveda. The festival celebration is traditionally credited to the 8th-century Hindu philosopher and saint Adi Shankara, as a part of his efforts to start major Hindu gatherings for philosophical discussions and debates along with Hindu monasteries across the Indian subcontinent.

Devotees were seen offering prayers and participating in the Ganga aarti, seeking blessings for the fulfilment of their wishes.
Basant Panchami – The Festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati
The Hindu festival of Basant Panchami, also known as Saraswati Panchami, Vasant Panchami, and Shri Panchami is celebrated on the first day of spring and falls on the fifth day of the month of Magha. Maa Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, music, and the arts, is honoured throughout the festival. It also heralds the start of Holi preparations, which take place forty days following the feast.

India’s Maha Kumbh 2025 is a highly anticipated event, marking a once-in-144-years occurrence. This grand festival is scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Preparations:
The Uttar Pradesh government has spent over 70 billion on infrastructure and sanitation projects.
Technology Integration:
Artificial intelligence tools and chatbots will be used to assist tourists and pilgrims. Security has embraced digital advancements, with AI-powered cameras and drones monitoring the area to detect crowd density and prevent barricade jumping. Face recognition technology is also deployed at security checkpoints. For visitors, a real-time Google chat feature ensures communication, while underwater drones provide surveillance for safety during the holy bath.
Medical Facilities:
Comprehensive medical facilities, including a 100-bed temporary central hospital, will be available.
Waste Management:
Its infrastructure has been significantly enhanced. Authorities report that $1.85 million have been allocated to waste management, with over 150,000 toilets set up.
Expected Attendance:
Up to 40 million visitors.
On 29th Jan., A Tragedy Occurred.
On January 29, a devastating stampede occurred during the Mauni Amavasya ritual, one of the most auspicious bathing days. It was a man-made tragedy. The incident resulted in at least 30 fatalities and numerous injuries as pilgrims rushed to the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. We pay our homage to all affected.
In Its Aftermath:
Authorities have initiated a judicial inquiry into the tragedy at once. In response to the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government has intensified safety measures to manage the massive influx of devotees, which is expected to reach around 400 million over the 45-day festival. Enhanced surveillance, including the deployment of underwater drones and the installation of over 2,700 AI-enabled cameras, has been implemented to monitor crowd movements and ensure safety. Additionally, infrastructure improvements such as the construction of 30 pontoon bridges and the development of a 15.25 km riverfront are underway to facilitate smoother pilgrim movement.
Visitors’ Flow Continues:
In spite of the tragedy, the Maha Kumbh Mela is traditionally attracting devotees across all age groups, including younger generations. The enhanced safety measures and infrastructure developments may influence the decision of Gen Z attendees to participate in the ongoing festivities.
First 20 Days - Visitors:
It’s estimated that in first 20 days, approx. 320 millions pilgrimages have diped (bath) in Triveni Sangam!
